This Ramadan I conducted a quiz for a close group of relatives. The quiz was on Islamic history, Quran, and Ramadan.

We had 9 players competing and everyday we had at least 5 players joining the quiz. Almost everyday we start at 4pm. Few days the timing slipped due requests from players as they were held up in other duties.

The rule of the quiz is very simple, the fastest to give the correct answer snatches 3 points and correct answers that follows gets a single point. Obviously, wrong answers do get any point. If any player felt the answer from the quiz master is not satisfactory, they are free to challenge the quiz master.

Though we had run the quiz on a friendly and democratic setting, there were occasions we had serious disagreements.

Every day we throw 3 quiz questions; Fridays are special, we have 5 questions. During the month we had a total of 94 quiz questions.

Preparing the questions requires some bit of research and discussions; I had my wife Tasneem helping me on questions as well, so thanks for her support.

I remember there was three occasions I needed to get outside help. These were learning experiences to me as well. There was a question on how many times Prophet (SAW) made Haj, I thought it was once, most of the players answered as one, however one player challenged me that it was 3. I had to get help from a Sheikh, and he was taken back by my dispute. The Sheikh needed time for reference and came back to me that the right answer was three. Prophet (SAW) made 2 Haj before Hijra, and the last is the farewell Haj that is the Haj popularized as it determined the way we should perform the Haj.

Another was about the presumed sacrificial location of Prophet Ismail (AS). There is contradiction on the exact location of where it was to happen. Since I received mixed answers, I thought I will get help from a Sheikh, and he needed reference as well.

When I received answers for the question in which Surah was mentioned at a very old age Prophet Zachariya (AS) would get a son?  I found out that same verse was repeated in Quran in Surah Al Imran and Surah Mariyam. So there were two answers for this questions.

These are some instances where I was also learning along with the players. Moreover, preparing the quiz question is also very fulfilling, enlightening, and knowledge enhancing.

The players ages varied from 10 to 50 years, so the questions had been designed thoughtfully that you must have the right mix of questions that will not repel but cement the generational divide.

For readers interest I like to share the quiz questions.
