Last week I was in Kulhudhoofushi to participate in a charity run on 25th April 2018.

The run was organized by Afeefuddin School to mark their 14th Anniversary.

It was a 3 km run. We started in front of the school gate, proceeded through the main road almost to the end of Ameenee Magu then doubled back to the finish line which was past the starting line.

Medals were awarded to the top finishers; including the top ten girls and boys.

There was a participation fee and those who wanted a “Preferred” or “Nice” number had to pay a little extra.

A highlight of the run was that the young school children from the other two schools also participated. There would have been more than 300 participants in total.

Kulhudhoofushi MP Mohamed Nasheed also participated in the run.

After the participants crossed the finish line, medals were awarded. At the very end of the proceedings it was announced that a special medal would be presented to a participant, awarded by the child’s parent.

I was a little perplexed as to why the school was entertaining such requests from parents, and wondered why, as in some other runs, everyone got a medal, here they are going to single out.

My confusion soon subsided however and gave way to elation, as the awardee was a challenged child – none other than little Suma. Upon receiving the award, she went up to her parent and I gave her a thumbs up. Suma returned the thumbs up with a big smile and I went misty eyed.

I hope to be back in Kulhudhufushi next year to run Afeefudin School’s 15th Anniversary run
