Dash challenges are perhaps the next big thing in sports in the Maldives, or perhaps it has already become popular.

This weekend we witnessed the Maldives Aquathlon Challenge where contestants had to run, swim and run to complete the race. The event was organized by Male’ Fitness Club and Kuda Husen Sports Academy. The event was absolutely fascinating.

The race brought all the running and swimming groups together as they competed in teams, with each participant contending in the area he or she excelled. My teenage son’s friends Abeel, Rixz and Aal got together as a team and took part in the challenge. I saw them enjoy the event to the absolute max.

The organization of the event had no major flaws. I wouldn’t fuss on the faults of the event because there was not much advertising, which is an indication of lack of sponsorship support. Considering the resources available to the organizers, the event was well executed.

On the lead-up to the event, a pre-event briefing was held at a prominent hotel in Male’. Participants who were unable to attend the briefing were advised to collect their bibs and attend the briefing on the event day.

A location was allotted to participants to keep their personal belongings at the event area on event day. The running path and swimming areas were well marked.

There was one water point at the running path, which was absolutely enough.

There were lifeguards and buoys at the swimming area. Trained first aiders were present and easily accessible. The safety of the participants was ensured at every point.

The event was organized by Male’ Fitness Club and Kuda Husen Sports Academy. Male’ Fitness Club is the first gym in the city and has been around for more than two decades. Mr. Shameem, a prominent lawyer and a fitness enthusiast led the event from MFC.

None other than Dr. Hussein led the effort from KH Sports Academy. Dr. Hussein is a beacon in sports in the Maldives and his academy has become one of the best-known names for training and developing young athletes.

(My sister  Maya from another mother, was there for her daughter- participating in swimming.)

The number of participants who engage in these events is a good indication of the enthusiasm for such challenges. Without much advertising, other than the word of mouth and free social media posts, the participation in the aquathlon was very encouraging.

(going to get wet- to swim just after run)

I look forward to similar events with more support from sponsors to make these events successful and perhaps more importantly, sustainable in the future. It is evident that there is immense advertising opportunity and great return in sponsoring these events in the Maldives.

Isn't these the type of events we should promote for the tourists visiting Maldives.
